Explanation: In Psalm 148 the Psalmist invites all of creation, animate and inanimate, men and animals, to praise the LORD their creator for his power, his glory, and his blessings. This exhortation was carried out in it's fullest expression, to date, on the occasion of the nativity of Christ. In today's painting we see heaven and earth rejoicing in the birth of Christ.

The Psalmist calls everything and everyone everywhere to praise the LORD. He begins with the heavens in the first part of the Psalm, exhorting them and their inhabitants to praise the LORD; and in the second part he exhorts the lower regions and their inhabitants to praise the LORD. He begins by calling for praise to come from heaven for the LORD. He calls for praise from God's angels, his hosts (armies), the sun, the moon, the stars, the heavens of heavens, and the waters (clouds) above the heavens. He is worthy of their praise because he created them and established them with a fixed decree (1-6). The Psalmist then turns his attention to the lower regions, calling for praise from the earth, the ferocious beasts of the sea (or land), the depths of the sea, the fire, the hail, the snow, the vapor, the stormy wind, the mountains, the hills, the fruit trees, the cedars, the beasts, the cattle, the creeping things, the birds, the kings, the people, the princes, the judges, the young men, the maidens, the old men, and the children. He is worthy of their praise because of his excellent name, his glory, and his empowerment of his people who praise him and live near to him (7-14).

THE PSALTER:

BOOK FIVE OF FIVE:

Psalms 107-150.

Psalm 148

1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights.
2 Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.
3 Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light.
4 Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.
5 Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.
6 He hath also stablished them for ever and ever: he hath made a decree which shall not pass.

7 Praise the LORD from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps:
8 Fire, and hail; snow, and vapour; stormy wind fulfilling his word:
9 Mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and all cedars:
10 Beasts, and all cattle; creeping things, and flying fowl:
11 Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth:
12 Both young men, and maidens; old men, and children:
13 Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven.
14 He also exalteth the horn of his people, the praise of all his saints; even of the children of Israel, a people near unto him. Praise ye the LORD.

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
