     [ Illustration: I am using the First Painting in reference to verse three of today's chapter which speaks of Wisdom's maidens which she sends forth to invite the simple to life and blessing. I am using the Second Painting to illustrate the deceit which Folly uses to bring death and cursing, as detailed in the last six verses of the chapter. ]

SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

     Explanation: In Proverbs 9, the personification of Wisdom continues from the previous chapter; and Folly is also personified.
     The chapter begins with a sumptuous image. Wisdom built a house with seven pillars; she prepared a great banquet of meat and mingled wine set upon her table. She sent forth her maidens to the highest places of the city to call the simple to come to the banquet, to forsake the foolish and live, and to go in the way of understanding (1-6).
     She warns that those who reprove a scorner and those who reprove a wicked man will get shame (abuse) and a blot (injury) because a scoffer will hate you. But a wise man will love you if you reprove him. If you instruct a wise man he will be still wiser. If you teach a righteous man he will increase in learning. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. By wisdom your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life. If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if you scoff, you alone will bear it (7-12).
     The woman Folly is loud, seductive, and knows nothing. She sits at the door of her house; she takes a seat on the highest places in town (as Wisdom does), and she calls to those who pass by, who otherwise would go straight on their way. She calls, (as Wisdom does), for the simple and those who lack sense. But instead of inviting them to a great banquet, as Wisdom did, she invites them to stolen water and bread eaten in secret, calling them sweet and pleasant -- ironically, this "feast" is mere bread and water. And the one she calls does not know that the dead are there and that her guests are in the depths of Hell (13-18).

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

Map 1: Bible Nations | Map 2: Empire of David and Solomon Map 3: Kingdoms of Judah and Israel | Post Exile Chronology.

1 Wisdom hath builded her house,
she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
2 She hath killed her beasts;
she hath mingled her wine;
she hath also furnished her table.
3 She hath sent forth her maidens:
she crieth upon the highest places [summits of heights of] the city,
4 Whoso is simple,
let him turn in hither:
as for him that wanteth understanding,
she saith to him,
5 Come,
eat of my bread,
and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
6 Forsake the foolish,
and live;
and go in the way of understanding.

7 He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame:
and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
8 Reprove not a scorner,
lest he hate thee:
rebuke a wise man,
and he will love thee.
9 Give instruction to a wise man,
and he will be yet wiser:
teach a just man,
and he will increase in learning.
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom:
and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
11 For by me thy days shall be multiplied,
and the years of thy life shall be increased.
12 If thou be wise,
thou shalt be wise for thyself:
but if thou scornest,
thou alone shalt bear it.

13 A foolish woman is clamorous:
she is simple,
and knoweth nothing [not what].
14 For she sitteth at the door of her house,
on a seat in the high places of the city,
15 To call passengers [travelers on the road]
who go right on their ways:
16 Whoso is simple,
let him turn in hither:
and as for him that wanteth understanding,
she saith to him,
17 Stolen waters are sweet,
and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.
18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there;
and that her guests are in the depths of hell.
