I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: In Isaiah 8, the LORD continues to speak to Isaiah [760-670 B.C.] about the destruction of Israel (Ephraim) and Syria; and he warns Judah about the destruction -- a flood of troops (under Tiglathpileser III [745-727 B.C.], Shalmaneser V [727-722 B.C.], and possibly Sargon II [722-705 B.C.], the King(s) of Assyria) -- which would come upon them for refusing to listen to the LORD and trusting in Rezin [792-732 B.C.], the King of Syria. This destruction was finalized in 722 B.C., when the last of the captives were deported from the ten Northern Tribes, called Israel or Ephraim, in contrast to the two Southern Tribes, called Judah, which continued to stand until the Babylonian Captivity about 582 B.C., when Jerusalem fell (1-10). The LORD also warns Isaiah to avoid a confederacy with the wicked and not to be afraid of them; rather, says the LORD, "Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread" (13); and he will be a sanctuary for those who trust him, but a source of harm for those who defy him (11-15). Then the command is given by the LORD (or perhaps by the prophet) to "Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples" (16). And, in response, Isaiah directs attention to the children whom the LORD had given him for signs and for wonders in Israel and as a testimony against those who seek familiar spirits and wizards -- warning that they will suffer hunger, darkness, and anguish (17-22). I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.
