[ Illustration: The First Image shows an artist's conception of the elaborateness of Solomon's Temple. It gives some idea of how elaborate Ezekiel's Temple might look were it to be constructed. The Second Image shows the courts of Ezekiel's Temple which are described in today's chapter. ]

SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

Explanation: In Ezekiel 41, the description of the visionary temple continues. It bears both similarities and differences to Solomon's Temple (depicted above). In the passage below, I have provided several idiomatic translations in square brackets. Notice, in these expressions, the sense of dynamism which Ezekiel seems to have experienced as the vision of the Temple unfolded before him. For example, in verse 7, the KJV reads as follows: "And there was an enlarging, and a winding about still upward to the side chambers: for the winding about of the house went still upward round about the house: therefore the breadth of the house was still upward, and so increased from the lowest chamber to the highest by the midst." A more idiomatic reading is this: "And there was a broadening and a revolving upward, upward - to the rib-chambers: for the circuits of the house went upward, upward - circling, circling the house: therefore the wideness of the house was overhead and so ascended from the lowest chamber to the highest in the center." (Compare the ESV of Ezekiel 41:7, which combines static and dynamic elements). Also, in the Hebrew, the present tense (the "imperfect" - indicating ongoing, uncompleted action) is used frequently in the chapter even though the KJV uses the past tense mostly.
Suffice it to say that the impression which I get from this and similar idioms in the chapter is one of a dynamic, moving vision, as if Ezekiel were being whirled about in an upward spiral while viewing the Temple. In some cases, as in the verse just quoted, it almost seems that parts of the Temple itself were moving. Overall, my impression is that the Temple described in this vision is not a mere passive object, but an active force in the affairs of men. Thus understood, it would be a perfect symbol for the Kingdom of God in all of it's manifestations, particularly those present and those to come.
The Inner Temple: The Holy and Most Holy Places (1-4). Ezekiel's guide measured posts and doors in the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place.
The Inner Temple: The Temple Wall and Side Chambers (5-11). The guide then measured walls, chambers, and doors.
The Outer Part of the Temple: The Separate Place and the Outside Walls (12-14). Next, the guide measured the outer building with its walls.
The Inner Temple: The Interior Furnishings and Decorations (15-20). The guide proceeded to measure the inner building with its porches, court, door posts, windows, galleries, doors,, and wall. They were paneled and decorated with two-faced cherubim and palm trees. Each cherub had the face of a man and of a lion. Each face looked in an opposite direction from the other, and each face looked at a palm tree which was between one cherub and another. This is gives the impression of being in a forest of palm trees filled with cherubim. Consequently, there is at least a hint of the Garden of Eden, particularly as depicted in Revelation 21:1-5.
The Inner Temple: Doors, Altar, Table, and Windows (21-26). The guide also showed Ezekiel the posts of the temple, measured the altar of wood, showed him the doors decorated with cherubim and palm trees, and showed him the windows and the side chambers.

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

D. The Return Motif (37:1 - 48:35)

3). Renewal: The New Temple and the New Land (40:1 - 48:35)

a). The New Temple (Continued) (40:1 - 44:31)

1 Afterward he bought me to the temple, and measured [this] the posts, six cubits broad on the one side, and six cubits broad on the other side, which was the breadth of the tabernacle. 2 And the breadth of the door was ten cubits; and the sides of the door were five cubits on the one side, and five cubits on the other side: and he measured the length thereof, forty cubits: and the breadth, twenty cubits.

3 Then went he inward, and measured the post of the door, two cubits; and the door, six cubits; and the breadth of the door, seven cubits. 4 So he measured [this] the length thereof, twenty cubits; and the breadth, twenty cubits, before the temple: and he said unto me, This is the most holy [holy of the holies] place.

5 After he measured the wall of the house, six cubits; and the breadth of every side chamber, four cubits, round about [circling, circling] the house on every side [circling]. 6 And the side chambers were three, one over another, and thirty in order; and they entered into the wall which was of the house for the side chambers round about [circling, circling], that they might have hold, but they had not hold in the wall of the house. 7 And there was an enlarging, and a winding about still upward [upward, upward] to the side chambers: for the winding about of the house went still upward [upward, upward] round about [circling, circling] the house: therefore the breadth of the house was still upward, and so increased from the lowest chamber to the highest by the midst.

8 I saw also the height of the house round about [circling, circling]: the foundations of the side chambers were a full reed of six great cubits. 9 The thickness of the wall, which was for the side chamber without, was five cubits: and that which was left was the place of the side chambers that were within. 10 And between the chambers was the wideness of twenty cubits round about [circling] the house on every side [circling, circling]. 11 And the doors of the side chambers were the place that was left, one door toward the north, and another door toward the south: and the breadth of the place that was left was five cubits round about [circling, circling].

12 Now the building that was before [upon the face of] the separate place at the end toward the west was seventy cubits broad; and the wall of the building was five cubits thick round about [circling, circling], and the length thereof ninety cubits. 13 So he measured [this] the house, an hundred cubits long; and the separate place, and the building, with the walls thereof, an hundred cubits long; 14 Also the breadth of the face of the house, and of the separate place toward the east, an hundred cubits.

     15 And he measured the length of the building over against [upon the face of] the separate place which was behind it [on its back], and the galleries thereof on the one side and on the other side [from there and from there], an hundred cubits, with the inner temple, and the porches of the court; 16 The door posts, and the narrow windows, and the galleries round about [circling] on their three stories, over against the door, cieled with wood round about [circling, circling], and from the ground up to the windows, and the windows were covered;

17 To that above the door, even unto the inner house, and without, and by all the wall round about [circling, circling] within and without, by measure. 18 And it was made with cherubims and palm trees, so that a palm tree was between a cherub and a cherub; and every cherub had two faces; 19 So that the face of a man was toward the palm tree on the one side [from there], and the face of a young lion toward the palm tree on the other side [from there]: it was made through all the house round about [circling, circling]. 20 From the ground unto above the door were cherubims and palm trees made, and on the wall of the temple.

21 The posts of the temple were squared, and the face of the sanctuary; the appearance of the one as the appearance of the other.

22 The altar of wood was three cubits high, and the length thereof two cubits; and the corners thereof, and the length thereof, and the walls thereof, were of wood: and he said unto me, This is the table that is before the LORD.

23 And the temple and the sanctuary had two doors. 24 And the doors had two leaves apiece, two turning leaves; two leaves for the one door, and two leaves for the other door. 25 And there were made on them, on the doors of the temple, cherubims and palm trees, like as were made upon the walls; and there were thick planks upon the face of the porch without. 26 And there were narrow windows and palm trees on the one side and on the other side [from there and from there], on the sides of the porch, and upon the side chambers of the house, and thick planks.
